This list is awesome! I remember with my 2nd pregnancy I just wanted to punch my former pregnant self in the face. I think it made it worse, I wasn’t sick the entire pregnancy. Then the 2nd one I was extremely nauseous all day every day! One thing I would add, would be taking the B6 along with 1/2 a Unisom twice a day. My doc recommended this and it worked most days for me. Totally pinning this for the next pregnancy! -Kelly @ Semi Homemade Mom

I really needed this tonight. Thanks for posting, it’s good to know there are others out there that get it. My mom has told me over and over. “I never really got sick when I was pregnant” well it’s no wonder you ended up with seven kids!!! I can totally relate to the “Good for you, shut your mouth lady!!!” especially those that have to post on fb all the dang time that they “just love being pregnant” ok, I have calmed down. I appreciate you posting some tips/advice and will definitely try. Thanks again.

So … this post made me cry! Thank you very much! I’m in the middle of this. I have two beautiful children already, but I’ve now had 3 miscarriages, and it is even harder to cope with being so sick when I don’t want to get my hopes up too high that I will have a baby at the end of it all. Anyway, you really helped me to feel understood, and I’m going to get the stuff for lime slushies and try that asap! I’ve used peppermint sticks as well.

My husband is way supportive, but he’s also a service love language, which means it’s hard on him when I’m not up to doing things around the house. He tries to be understanding, but he sees me taking care of the kids as being out of love for them, so I don’t know how to communicate love to him without pushing myself to do things that make me a basket case. Anyway, Thanks for this post! I’m really grateful for it.

thanks for the reminder that the only things that matter are your hubby, kids and the baby inside. i’m tired of feeling so guilty that I can’t go near the dishes or even stomach the thought of vacuuming. :( i have forgotten to feed the kids lunch once or twice… but thought my “help” had done it… it sucks.
good thing it IS worth it in the long run!

  5. Suzie says:

Wow I thought I had tried everything when I was pregnant. I ended up being put in the hosptial b/c I couldn’t keep anything down and ended up losing 30 pounds with my first child and about 15 with my second. It was kinda funny having to explain to the nurses why my weight was less at the end of my pregnacy than it was at the beginning. Well, I just happen to be one of those lucky(not)women that has a disorder called HG which leaves little ways to give relief but pills, rest, and…well anything my stomach could handle. If I decide to have any other children I will definitely keep these tricks handy.

    Thanks

Thanks for the great tips! I belong to a mothers of preschoolers group (MOPS) and we are always encouraging our moms to help each other out. Many want so much to help but are afraid of offending someone if they show up unannounced to offer help. My sister had morning sickness like you did and it killed me to live so far away from her that I couldn’t help. She was really lucky to have a large church family that came over with meals, slurpee’s, grocery’s, cleaning, just being there, prayer, etc. A few times she heard the lawnmower but was too weak to see who it was. Yep, someone came over once a week and mowed their lawn knowing that her husband had a lot on his plate helping her when he came home from work. If they hadn’t walked through her door when she said she didn’t really need help (meaning her house was a mess and didn’t want someone seeing it) or just mowing her lawn without asking, she would have never agreed to it nor thought of some of it. It made all the difference. Thank you for explaining what it is REALLY like and how to help or ask for help. :-)

  7. Molly says:

This is a great list, I’ll keep it for next time! I know my morning sickness wasn’t as bad as some people’s, but feeling nauseous 24/7 really wears on you – and now that we have the first kid, I’m dreading trying to deal with feeling that way again and having to try and take care of a toddler instead of being able to just go take a nap!

I’d have to agree about the Unisom – I took one every night for a few weeks when it was the worst. I also really liked Propel Zero waters – they’re fruit flavored, which always sounded really refreshing to me, and they have vitamin B6 in them, which I figured could only help. I’m so glad someone else felt that they were more likely to eat if they didn’t have to cook the food. I gained way too much weight with my first pregnancy because my husband was working 2 jobs and wasn’t home to help much, so I would eat anything I could just microwave and basically hide in another room until it was done. If I didn’t think about the food or smell it while it was cooking, then just wolfed it down as fast as I could, it was basically the only way I could eat!

  8. Cassie Lloyd says:

Thank you! I have been feeling so lazy and useless lately! This is my first baby and my husband and I just moved away from both of our families! We don’t have anyone close by to help us out which makes it really difficult! I feel so terrible putting most/all of the housework on him, but I cannot get off the couch! My “morning” sickness is waaaaaay worse the more I get up and move around. About 10-15 minutes is my max. Any longer and I am running for the toilet! Eating is now a chore and no longer enjoyable at all! But the only advice I keep getting is “just keep eating, you have to eat for that baby!”. No really? Trust me I would if I could, but when people tell me that I want to punch them in the face. I am so glad to know I am not alone! You have some wonderful suggestions. Popsicles are one thing that really does help me. So my lovely husband got creative and made me some ginger ale Popsicles! They are so yummy and a nice way to change up plain ole ginger ale! I highly suggest them! Thank you again for your great ideas!

  9. Elizabeth says:

Thank you so much for posting your tips and what helped you. I feel like I’ve tried everything- I’m sure, like everyone else. Tha k you for posting not just food tips, but keeping your sanity as well. Bless your heart! :)

  10. Angela Busselberg says:

So, here’s some advice my doc told me about the B6 – don’t expect it to help that day, usually it only helps if you take it consistently. The B6 is beneficial in the extra blood production of pregnancy.

And bananas! The potassium can really help. I couldn’t stand the texture of bananas, but I could put it in my smoothies. I could palette any smoothie over “real” food, so I drank lots of them.

Starlight mints and ginger candies too. These are natural anti-nausea herbs. Look for ones that have real ginger and peppermint. I added some grated ginger to my water, this helped make the water go down AND the ginger settled my stomach!

I did lots of research about Morning Sickness and there isn’t an exact cause- because the cause various person to person and thus remedies very person to person. So, when people are make crazy suggestions trying to help, they aren’t crazy!

  11. SC says:

My first OB always said if you’re going to invariably throw up, keep food down as long as you can. The longer you can keep any little thing in your belly, the better chance your body has to get some nutrients from it. Same for water- sip slowly and just keep what little you can as long as you can. Some days it was impossible, but whether I was lucky or this really works, it kept me out of the hospital.

With my second I always tried to eat protein first thing and that seemed to help a ton, but then did nothing except make me feel more sick with the third.

The only universal advice I’ve ever heard is rest. Turn on movies for the older kids and make that couch your best friend. Also keep a bowl near by because just rolling over might be enough to do you in!

  12. Alissa says:

Words cannot express my elation and the joyful tears I shed as I read this post!! I am a first-time mommy and this pregnancy I’m sure was going to do me in! You have given me light and hope and God bless those friends of yours. I have tried everything even weird remedies and I am so excited to actually GO to the STORE and get this stuff (hubby works long hours). THANK YOU!

  13. Tina says:

Spearmint gum was what worked best for me. I was sick all day up until the middle of my second trimester. After that I would get sick once a day up until about 2 weeks after I had her. But really the only thing that helped was spearmint gum and hard lemon candy…Now I hate spearmint gum, even the smell of it and lemon candy. LOL

  14. techkim says:

I agree with the bean burritos. The protein TOTALLY helps and since I don’t eat meat and dairy is NOT my friend right now its beans. The lemon or limon Popsicle worked well but anything too sweet was right out the door. Ugh have another 3 months to go since my normal throw up stage is 6 months.

  15. Sara Smith says:

I too was horribly sick, hospitalized 4 times in my first pregnancy and 3 in my second. Prescription meds helped some, however my BEST help were the following:

    1st pregnancy
    Mint gum
    Plumbs
swimming classes (the more the better!)

    2nd pregnancy
    strawberry lime trident
rice (white, prepared like your potato!)
a miracle homeopathic remedy called Nux Vomica (consult your physician, my nurse midwife approved, along with my mom (a physician), but you MUST check with your own doctor/nurse before taking ANYTHING!

rest and the friends ARE awesome!

I love your ideas! Thank you for sharing!

  16. Shandra says:

I’ve been pregnant five times now, puking like crazy for all five of my first trimesters and beyond! I thought I’d heard it all, but you actually gave me some new tips for next time! I really hope that these work for me. Morning sickness can be awful, but I was always grateful for those friends who would show up with dinner one night, many without even knowing I was pregnant yet, just that they felt that they should help me out in some way. Family and friends have been the only things that have saved me (and my kids!) during those trimesters. Thank you SO much for sharing!

  17. Oh, I wish I could have found all these helpful tips when I was pregnant! I was sick the whole 9 months and I got SO tired of women telling me that they were either never sick, sick for that long or if they were sick it didn’t bother them. It made me want to puke just hearing comments like that!

I am however still glad I came a crossed this because my sister is pregnant with her 2nd and she’s always feeling terrible.
I definitely sent your link her way. I know she’ll be excited to try something new and hopefully find “the one” thing that helps her out all the time.

  18. Shelby says:

Every prego is diffrent and not everything that works for on preg works for another preg,
But thi was a really cool list and some great advice. I hope it works well with others as well and will try next time im prego

  19. Kaitlyn says:

I found that ginger was wonderful for morning sickness as well

  20. Beth says:

Thanks so much for all the tips especially about coping mentally. I have been feeling so guilty about being miserable because everyone always says what a “magical time” it is. So glad to know that I am not the only person who has sobbed over not being able to do this any more.

  21. Simone says:

This list is amazing! Great advice & you explain it so well. I had terrible all day & night sickness the whole 9months during my 1st pregnancy it was hell & my midwives really didn’t get it – one midwife even told me it wasn’t possible to have morning sickness in the 2nd & 3rd trimester. I assure you it is! My 2nd pregnancy my all day & night sickness lasted 5months. I’ve tried many of your tips & they do help ease the sickness. I was really affected by even the faintest wiff of food smell & threw up EVERY time I opened the fridge. I needed strong clean smells in my house oddor neutralizers & scented things. The coke tip is a good one it helped me so much in my 2nd pregnancy & although I limited myself to 1 can a day & had 2/3 days off a week my teeth suffered badly – lots of post natal trips to the dentist :(.

  22. Just wondering if anyone’s read this awesome post about helping prevent morning sickness before you get pregnant:

    http://www.mommypotamus.com/the-real-cause-of-morning-sickness/

It’s pretty good, and was SO helpful for me. It has a link to ideas that help once you’re pregnant too. It makes sense, super-severe morning sickness is kind of a “modern” ailment (did you ever hear about ladies 100 years ago puking all day long, their entire pregnancy? They would’ve died.), so eating “old fashioned” food and using traditional remedies sounds like a good idea.

  23. Melissa says:

Here I am with pregnancy number 4, I have had nausea with the 1st but it was never this bad, some of the things you have mentioned I am looking forward to trying. Thank you all for the recommendations!

  24. Tara says:

This post actually made me cry! (I’m going to blame it on the pregnancy hormones…) I’m 16 weeks preggo with my 5th and am just barely starting to feel like I might survive. Every single pregnancy is crappy so after the first I always knew what I was getting into, but that doesn’t make you feel any better as you’re hugging the toilet 24-7. I have SO much empathy for anyone else who goes through this during pregnancy. My one tip I wanted to add was that for some reason milk has helped a little. I don’t usually drink much milk because I don’t really like the taste. However, with this pregnancy, chocolate milk has been my best friend. I have no idea why, but hey, I’ll take it! Good luck!

  25. Lynn says:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE ALL your comments! Thank you for taking the time to share. I have never had this many comments before. Maybe I need to write more mom thoughts :) I will post a pic of my sweet baby soon. By they way, easiest baby ever. She was worth the trouble! :)

  26. Aja says:

Danielle- actually women DID die from morning sickness back in the day. Until the 1900s when IV fluids were made, hyperemesis was the leading killer of pregnant women. Now, it’s murder. I am all for natural health- I’ve had two natural births and one was a home birth. However, I have hyperemesis will all my pregnancies and it’s unavoidable for me.

  27. Brooke says:

These are great tips! I was also very sick with my pregnancy! Lemon drops worked great for me. You think the sickness will never go away but it will and once you see the beautiful baby… It’s totally worth it!

  28. melanie says:

I thought I was crazy and the only one when the thought of water makes me sick right now….lime slushies….yum

  29. Cara says:

Bless you for this post, it made me cry. I am in the middle of it right now and can barely crawl out of bed. Thank you for the reminders about what truly matters and that it will end. It is very difficult when it seems that no one understands what you are going through. I appreciate your understanding most of all.

  30. Polly says:

Thank you so much for this article! I’m newly pregnant, newly married, and newly a step mom to 3 kids. I’ve been a bit of a basket case emotion wise and haven’t gotten sick much at all yet, but all of your very real thoughts and ideas really encouraged me. I feel so guilty about not having everything put away in the house yet because I’m too exhausted to face it and want to burst into tears every time I walk into the living room. Anyway, all of you veteran moms, I appreciate the honesty.

  31. tiff says:

Morning sickness suckers I got some at the maternity store worked somedays

  32. Katie says:

Peanut Butter! I swear by it right now. When I get off work at night I come home and sit down with a jar of peanut butter and a bowl of rice krispies. I’ll get a little PB on my spoon and then dip it in my dry cereal. Eat this right before bed seems to help keep me from being sick the next morning. You don’t have to eat the PB and cereal together. The PB is what really does the trip. I’ve even started carrying a small jar in my purse for when I start to get sick/hungry at work, etc.

  33. tera says:

What in inspirational message. It’s just what I needed to read. I’ve been dealing with morning sickness for just two weeks and I don’t know how I will make it how ever many months this will last. Thank you for the wise words.

  34. Brenda says:

I enjoyed reading all the posts. My son will be 19 in a couple of weeks, he was my first pregnancy.
I was completely exhausted. I would come home from work at noon, go to bed,my husband would same me up to eat supper and I would crawl back on bed and sleep until I had to get up to go to work again. I also slept on a heating pad, because I was freezing, in June in the Midwest. I was fortunate with him, I only got sick two times. I felt nauseous with my second pregnancy, but lost the baby at 12 weeks. My third pregnancy, I was not nearly as sick as most of you. But, if I ate too much or not enough or the
wrong thing I would get sick. I’ve always blamed it on the hormones and because I was expecting a girl. (I know a lot of people have morning sickness with both boys and girls.)p I was sick for 5 months, during that pregnancy. I found eating a handful of salted nuts helped me, or having some kind of protien going in every 2 hours. I would eat a meal on the way to our friends house to eat dinner, because I couldn’t wait until the time they wanted to eat. Don’t get me wrong. By the time they had food ready I was ready to eat again. By the way my daughter ate exactly every 2 hours after she was born.
I was huge and I remember trying to clean my bathroom, sitting on the edge of the tub, using my feet to try and mop the floor, crying my eyes out, because I could no longer reach between them on my hands and knees. I wish I had friends like you did.
Accept any help you can get. Thank your husband for everything he does. Enjoy the awesome friends and family you have. (Even when they drive u crazy)
I’m an only child because my Mom was Sooo sick the entire pregnancy, and I was born in the 60’s when they didn’t induce. So she was sick for 10 months. I was a month over due.

  35. Mia says:

WOW, I am like many others that have also commented before me… I am in complete tears reading this post! I’m 15 weeks and have been sick and on bed rest for the last 8 weeks with HG. I’m so miserable but trying to very hard to keep my spirits up. I can’t even explain how comforting it is just to read that other woman feel like I do… I love and want my baby so badly and try to remind myself everytime I’m hovering the porcelin goddess that its a good sign to be sick, even all the time. But it sure doesn’t make it easier… and I almost cry every time I step on the scale and it goes down instead of up. I have a wonderful husband and I think he is the only thing getting me through this… Can’t wait to send him to the store to try out some of these new remedies! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us :)

  36. Amy says:

I know you wrote this months ago, but I just found it on pinterest, and had to let you know that it couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I am currently pregnant with child #2 and am suffering each and every day. I am 13 weeks along and while it does slowly seem to be getting better, I still have my very bad days that make me want to die. Nobody who hasn’t been through this (or at least intimately involved with someone who has been through this) can understand how isolating, depressing, and utterly debilitating it can be.

You hit the nail on the head with each and every one of your suggestions and I just wanted you to know this. Most of all, your reminder for all of us who have been through this to help out a woman who is going through it, will never be forgotten. I have had some great friends who have made us meals, checked on me everyday, and kept me going, and I will never forget it. I also couldn’t agree more about spousal support. I could never have managed without my husband. There are wonderful men in the world and it sounds like you, and many of your readers, have been blessed to love them!

Thanks so much for your post!

  37. Jenni Lynne says:

This helps so much! I recently found out I was pregnant with my first and I really didn’t know what to expect. I already have had motion sickness my whole life but this takes the cake. It’s so uncontrollable when it comes and goes and sometimes can become so frustrating. It was great reading about how you couldn’t stand or stomach to cook your own food. My wonderful husband is so great and endearing and has been doing this for me. One thing I found works best for me in the morning is fresh fruit, mainly pineapple. I don’t know what’s in it but it stays down and makes my stomach settle. Might be worth a try.

    Thanks!

  38. Jessica McSwain says:

Thank you so much for this advice I needed to hear every word of it your baby is precious God Bless and thank you so much

  39. Erica says:

Great tips from someone who really gets it. I am 14wks into my 3rd pregnancy and it has been the worst sickness. I wasnt able to hold anything down and lost 15lbs in 2wks. Looking forward to trying out some of your tips. The only other tips ive gotten were to try to eat very bland foods. Thanks :)

  40. Aimee says:

What an awesome post! I was feeling down today and def needed that! I am just about 11 weeks and I just feel like poo all the time. i have an awesome husband who is very supportive but I just want to eel better! I am def looking forward to trying the lemon pops and lime slushy! Sounds very soothing for my belly and my baby! thank you so much for the encourgement!

  41. Chelsea says:

Aww thank you so much! I’m 6 wks and the neaseau and spewing has just started!! I’ve been so miserable today and remembered that I had ‘pinned’ this article ages and ages before I was pregnant. Hoping that some of these things will help :) I’m going to go buy some popsicles in the morning! Great article, and your writing style is fantastic :) Very easy to read and relate to! My blog is just new and I ahven’t really gotten into it much yet :) :)

  42. Dayna says:

I am getting ready to try again, first pregnancy was tubal, and I was sick with that pregnancy…also have a friend that is super sick so I sent this link to her too. I’m so glad I love to research so I know all of this ahead of time so I will be prepared in a month when we can start trying!!!

P.S. Your baby is uber adorable!!!

  43. Simone says:

Hi, i’m back again. Just a quick update as i’m expecting baby number 3 & of course the morning sickness strikes again however, i’ve been taking B6 throughout this pregnancy & I think it’s one of the best tips for seriously easing the morning sickness – this has been by far my least sicky pregnancy. Also i’ve discover Lucozade works really well – I don’t know if you have that in the USA (I live in the UK) its marketed as a sports drink but is an old fashioned remedy for upset stomachs and my mum always used to give it to us when we were ill & couldn’t keep food down. Its really helping with my sickness.
I’ve recomended youer post to countless friends – bless you for sharing all your tips, you honestly have made SUCH a huge difference to me.

  44. Tristy says:

Thank you for this post and list. I have tried everything most of it helps sometimes for a little while but nothing really takes away the nausea. I am about 7 weeks and watching my almost 3yr old son and my sister’s almost 2 yr old daughter. I can barely make them breakfast and lunch everyday. Most days I run to the bathroom soon after getting them their food because I can’t handle the smell. I haven’t felt like a human being for weeks and I feel so useless. My husband is great and has been making dinners and taking care of our son at night but having to be a mom while feeling horrible is seriously the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I feel bad saying anything because I have a lot of friends that haven’t been able to get pregnant so they say I’d rather be sick and pregnant than not have any kids. And I can completely sympathize with them but they don’t understand what it’s like. There has only been one or two days I have cried to my husband saying I don’t know if i can do this. Just hoping and praying it goes away in the second trimester.

  45. Amber says:

Thank you so much for this post. I am 11 weeks pregnant with my first and have been so sick. The bit about not being able to even drink water is definitely me. I drink water because I am so thirsty but it makes me throw up. Sparkling mineral water does seem to help sometimes and sometimes slurpees help. Sometimes I find myself laying on the bathroom floor after vomiting up everything in my stomach and just bawling my eyes out because I feel like I can’t keep going like this. My husband tries to be helpful but I just feel so miserable I don’t want anything he offers because I don’t want to put anything in my stomach. Now that the first trimester is coming to an end I am hoping the nausea will get better, some of my energy is coming back a little (I still nap a lot).

  46. Sarah says:

Thank you so much for the words of advice. This is my first pregnancy and I am only 10 weeks and I have been feeling like I never ever want to be pregnant again. Ha! I know this will change once I hold my little one in my arms and experience that love but right now-all I have wanted to do is put myself into a hole and sleep until its time to have the baby. I always thought I would enjoy pregnancy and maybe I will get some relief once I am out of the first trimester but if not-I just have to go easy on myself-after all I am creating another human being. Anyway-I am looking forward to trying some of your tips out-especially the lime slush. Your baby is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the tips and words of encouragement-its absolute music to my ears to hear that it is ok to break down and cry-keep up the good work mamma.

  47. Danika K says:

This is by far the best advice I’ve read so far. So many different ways to cope there is no way that not one of these can help anyone who reads this. Honestly though the advice about keeping the love was the best antidote & made me smile so big. Thank you for you’re words of wisdom!

  48. Kierstin says:

Great list and encouragement! Morning sickness is a true living hell. I would rather experience childbirth 10x over than go through morning sickness again, yet I know that someday soon I will! Because the outcome is amazing :) I second the commenter who mentioned Unisom. It may not be natural but that stuff is what kept me alive, it felt like. Also, clementines, freezer pops, and my husband, who somehow also survived those 4 months of total despair and vomit.

I think there should be a warning with the rice though, haha–if it comes back up, it’s really hard to throw up because it kind of chokes you = \ Same goes for oatmeal.

  49. Vanessa says:

I just found out I’m pregnant and I’m feeling the morning sickness already. Thanks so much for the tips! I’m definitely making a lime slushie asap. :) This baby will be so worth it!

  50. Carissa says:

Thank you thank you thank you! I just finished having a good cry for the first time in my 5 weeks of feeling like crap. Crap actually doesn’t even describe the feeling but its bad. Anyways thanks for sharing I like the lime slushies and will try this tomorrow. But most of all it was nice to know someone actually gets it. My friends haven’t been sick like me so no one has understood the depth of sickness. Thanks.
