{"id":630,"date":"2010-07-04T23:27:46","date_gmt":"2010-07-04T23:27:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/?p=630"},"modified":"2011-07-26T21:33:44","modified_gmt":"2011-07-26T21:33:44","slug":"painting-tips-from-lynn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/?p=630","title":{"rendered":"Painting Tips from Lynn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sorry its been forever since I have posted anything.\u00a0 I always think summer is going to slow things down, but nope!\u00a0 Seems to have gotten crazier at our house.\u00a0 Anywho, you clicked on this little post because you want to paint something!\u00a0 Love it!\u00a0 Paint gives new life to some many things.\u00a0 Your kitchen cabinets, furniture, walls&#8230; you name it.\u00a0 A friend sent me an e-mail today, asking if I knew how to help reduce paint brush strokes.\u00a0 I thought, BLOG IT!\u00a0 Hahaha&#8230; After our house flooded a few years ago, we have just about repainted every wall, ceiling, and cabinet door in this house.\u00a0 (I also love to buy furniture off craigslist and fix it up!\u00a0 I have to say this quietly b\/c the hubbs is not really a fan of me bringing home stray furniture. shh&#8230;)\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-632\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/?attachment_id=632\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-632\" title=\"painting\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/painting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/painting.jpg 587w, https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/painting-500x333.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Tips! (these are from trial and error, paint service desk people,\u00a0 and from Aunt Kathy my paint go to lady)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 1!<\/span> When painting your cabinets or furniture, to reduce the brush strokes use a product called Floetrol.\u00a0 You mix it into your paint and it helps smooth things out.\u00a0 If you want things really smooth you will have to rent a sprayer.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 2<\/span> Primer!! Use one, they help a ton.\u00a0 And when you are painting something dark, have the paint guys tint it gray for you.\u00a0 That will save you time and money!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 3<\/span> This goes with number 2, but Kilz really is the best primer\/stain blocker there is.\u00a0 I had a stain on my front door, I used two other primers before trying Kilz.\u00a0 It was the only on that the stain didn&#8217;t leak through.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 4<\/span> If you use a water-based paint and then need to use a clear coat of varnish to help it stay strong, MAKE SURE that the varnish is also water-based or it will yellow over time.\u00a0 Same with oil paint= use oil-based varnish.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 5<\/span> Lowes and finally Home Depot have little 7 ounce cans that you can buy.\u00a0 These are great for testing a color in a room.\u00a0 And DO test it out BEFORE painting.\u00a0 You will be happy you did.\u00a0 Nothing worse that painting an entire room than hating the color.\u00a0 Trust me&#8230;I still need to repaint Beck&#8217;s room, but it&#8217;s not going to happen anytime soon.\u00a0 Oh!\u00a0 and don&#8217;t just paint a little stripe of color on one wall, do a 10&#215;10 square on a few walls.\u00a0 Color will look different on each wall depending on how the light hits each wall.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 6<\/span> My latest experiment-Stripes!\u00a0 When painting stripes, first paint your main wall color.\u00a0 Then tape off the stripes you want using the fine blue painters tape.\u00a0 Then use main wall color again to go over\u00a0 tape just a little to cover any gaps between the wall and the tape, so stripe color doesn&#8217;t leak under tape.\u00a0 Let that dry then paint stripes.\u00a0 Let dry and then remove tape.\u00a0 Stripes are so pretty and a great way to add interest to a room.\u00a0 I will post some\u00a0 more pictures when I finish my room.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-631\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/?attachment_id=631\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-631\" title=\"stripes\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/stripes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 7<\/span> Paint architectural details, people in magazines and on TV design shows are always saying this, but it really adds to a room.\u00a0 Check out my cool window.\u00a0 I painted the inside lip brown and the outside a light tan popping off the gray walls.\u00a0 I love it.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-633\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/?attachment_id=633\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-633\" title=\"window\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/window.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 8<\/span> I should have put this one up by the furniture\/cabinet stuff, but sand as best you can then wipe clean before priming.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t have to sand everything off or strip paint before you paint.\u00a0 Yes, it helps and is a must if you are staining the wood.\u00a0 But other wise just sand a bit so the paint has something to stick to and use a really good primer.\u00a0 You will be set.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 9<\/span> Don&#8217;t be afraid of dark colors or painting your ceiling.\u00a0 I just painted my bedroom.\u00a0 Gray walls, gray\/blue ceiling, and chocolate brown fire place.\u00a0 It so beautiful.\u00a0 My husband was a little nervous the ceiling would look low and make the whole room very dark.\u00a0 But, now that it is all done, it is so inviting and pretty :).\u00a0 Paint your ceiling! (warning neck may hurt and paint may fall in eyes, just to let you know:))<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-634\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/?attachment_id=634\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-634\" title=\"fireplace\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lynnspin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/fireplace.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 10<\/span> If you want the lines where your ceiling and walls meet to be perfect; get over it, hire someone else, or&#8230;use a little art paint brush to tidy up any bumps.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Number 11<\/span> Buy good brushes. Clean them good when you are done.\u00a0 Brushes can be expensive, but if you have more than one project and take good care of them; it will be worth it to pay a few more dollars.<\/p>\n<p>I know I have more tips, but that&#8217;s all I can think of right now.\u00a0 Feel free to post a question or e-mail me and I will try to answer your painting questions the best I can.\u00a0 And have fun!!
